The Enterprise Grid Alliance and the Global Grid Forum have completed their merger. The combined grid computing standards group will operate under a new name: the Open Grid Forum (OGF).
The Global Grid Forum has its roots in academic and scientific computing, but has branched out in recent years to embrace the rise of enterprise grid computing, while the EGA was formed to accelerate enterprise grid adoption.
GGF Chairman Mark Linesch, on assignment from HP, will serve as president and chief executive officer of the new group. The OGF will be headquartered in Chicago, home of the GGF and Argonne National Laboratory, birthplace of the Globus open source grid computing software.
"This merger integrates the passion, expertise and experience of the EGA and GGF members to enhance our capability to deliver results faster, communicate more clearly, and collaborate more effectively," Linesch said in a statement. "The name Open Grid Forum is inspired by our international community of grid researchers, developers, educators, users and solution providers, who, by working together, open new doors to scientific discovery, business value and commercial adoption worldwide."
"By integrating the best of both organizations, we are able to better connect the interests of enterprise, academia and government in an open, collaborative environment that stimulates innovation, promotes interoperability and advocates for the value of grid computing," said EGA president Don Deutsch.
Over the next several months, OGF will focus on completing the merger integration. It will finalize the board of directors and day-to-day operations leadership team; transition current members and recruit new members into the organization; leverage old and build new alliances with standards bodies and industry associations; and build out its regional functions across the globe.
In an e-mail to the membership of both groups, Linesch said, "As we complete the integration over the next few months, I need each of you to continue the work that you are doing in support of our mission together. Existing GGF and EGA leaders remain in place to facilitate progress during the integration phase. We will continue all technical work and anticipate little if any disruption to group activities. Group chairs will remain group chairs and groups will remain groups and I will continue to place our emphasis on accelerating results."
