ARM Implements Platform Intelligence
January 28, 2003
By Paul Shread

ARM, a provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, has implemented Platform Intelligence and Platform LSF to better align IT resources with business objectives, Platform Computing said.

Platform Intelligence, an IT analytics solution, and Platform LSF, the foundation of Platform's Enterprise Grid solution, are being installed across up to 1200 CPUs at five design centers in the UK, France and the USA, and will integrate existing Sun Solaris systems and newer Linux systems into an Enterprise Grid.

"With Platform Intelligence we have a detailed, enterprise-wide view of IT resource utilization as it relates to individual projects and, therefore, corporate objectives," said Ibrahim Chadirichi, ARM's IT development director. "Information technology is a critical part of our business, and a major proportion of our costs, therefore, we need to make informed decisions and optimize our IT resources to consistently finish on time, on budget and maintain our market leadership. Knowing how our infrastructure is performing over time will provide the vital information necessary to add new resources for new projects and maintain maximum efficiency and throughput within acceptable cost limits."

Platform calls Platform Intelligence "the first 'IT Analytics' solution of its kind, combining business intelligence technology with a highly-scalable adaptive agent framework to provide a solution for rapid decision-making. Going beyond traditional operational and system management tools, Platform Intelligence provides business-specific information that is correlated to expose the interdependent relationship between distributed IT assets and business objectives."

Sun Makes Jobs Applications Manager Open Source

Sun Microsystems is contributing the source code for the Jini network technology-based Jobs Applications Manager (JAM) prototype to the open source Grid Engine Project (http://gridengine.sunsource.net).

Developed in collaboration with the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing, JAM technology provides a tool kit for researchers and computer scientists to experiment and explore how Jini network technology coupled with distributed resource management tools, like Sun's Grid Engine software, can be implemented to help join multiple Grids seamlessly into a virtualized set of resources. Providing a sample integration of Jini and Grid technologies, Sun said it is demonstrating the potential synergies between the two technologies in delivering Grid computing as a service and providing technical customers a tool kit which can be dissected and manipulated to work with their existing applications.

"Open source development is a cornerstone of Sun's Grid computing vision," said Wolfgang Gentzsch, Sun's director of Grid Computing.

Avaki Packages New Grid Software Introduction Kit

Avaki Corp. has introduced Avaki Quick Connect, a packaged solution that the company said will provide organizations with a fast and easily deployable introduction to Avaki's newest Grid software solutions, Avaki Data Grid 3.0 and Avaki Comprehensive Grid 3.0.

Avaki Quick Connect is available through June 30, 2003 to demonstrate the capabilities of Avaki Data Grid 3.0 and Avaki Comprehensive Grid 3.0 to deliver immediate ROI by dramatically improving productivity while reducing infrastructure cost and complexity, the company said.

"Avaki's unique Grid software is currently helping companies in a variety of industries overcome significant data and IT challenges, thereby improving their ability to compete," said Gary Phillips, Avaki's senior VP of sales, marketing and services. "With the Avaki Quick Connect program, we are providing an opportunity for companies to experience first hand the benefits of deploying our best-of-breed solution so they can immediately realize the benefits of access to the valuable data that is needed to increase the speed of product development."

Avaki Data Grid 3.0 creates a federated data service that enables the secure sharing of data among wide-area, multi-organizational users and applications. Avaki Comprehensive Grid 3.0 provides wide-area access to processing, data, and application resources in a single, uniform operating environment. Combining the benefits of Avaki Compute Grid and Avaki Data Grid, Avaki Comprehensive Grid unifies processing and data resources across locations and administrative domains with different hardware, operating systems, and system configurations, creating a federated environment that is secure and easy to administer.

Available immediately, Avaki Quick Connect for Avaki Data Grid 3.0 is priced at $35,000 and Avaki Quick Connect for Avaki Comprehensive Grid 3.0 is priced at $50,000. Avaki Quick Connect packages include software licenses, deployment services, and one year of maintenance. For more information, visit www.avaki.com/AQC.

Egenera Powers JPMorgan Grid, Partners With Powerllel

Egenera announced that it has received a multi-system order for its Egenera BladeFrame from JPMorgan Chase. The BladeFrame units are being deployed as the first hardware platform in JPMorgan's Grid computing initiative, "Compute Backbone," the company said.

Compute Backbone is a cost-effective, adaptable infrastructure that makes CPU capacity available as a centralized, shared network service by pooling and isolating processing resources for compute-intensive applications, the firm said.

Powerllel announced that it has joined the Egenera Assured Solution Alliances program, validating Powerllel software for the Egenera BladeFrame environment through rigorous testing in Egenera labs.

The companies have teamed to optimize the performance of computationally intensive applications running on the Egenera system. Powerllel's application service framework toolkit adapts sequentially coded applications to run in distributed and parallel computing environments.

Egenera and Powerllel together will offer a solution for organizations seeking to lower costs while improving time-to-results for pricing, hedging and risk analysis in the front, middle and back office, the companies said.

Powerllel's technology dynamically splits an application at run-time to provide application load balancing for best time-to-results computing performance. Powerllel's Lobster (LOad Balancing Sub-Task ExecuteR) software system continually reassesses the application decomposition and mapping using proprietary algorithms that optimize performance in run-time.

Other methods of Grid distributed processing pre-define application decomposition, eliminating the ability to adjust, on the fly, to changes in computing topology and performance, including available processors and I/O characteristics, the company said. The Lobster system also provides application level fault tolerant capabilities.

"Without this technology, computations would start from the beginning and negatively impact critical business processes," Powerllel said. The technology can be used to eliminate the need for application developers to implement parallel processing tasks within the application, greatly reducing application development time. Powerllel Adapters are tailored to the structure of an application allowing an application to be integrated with Lobster in a matter of hours, the firm said.
