Don't go searching under "grid computing" if you're looking for the latest news from DataSynapse.
That's because the grid computing pioneer and possibly the fastest-growing grid vendor is no longer using the term in its news releases, preferring instead to lump its products under the broader term "virtualization."
The move comes as 451 Group analysts predict that the term "grid computing" could be dropped by vendors in favor of "virtualization."
DataSynapse hasn't used the term "grid computing" in a press release since November. Recent releases such as a partnership announcement with OpTier have focused on virtualization instead.
Other grid vendors such as United Devices are also increasingly positioning themselves as virtualization companies.
DataSynapse spokesman Shayne Higdon said the reason for the company's re-positioning is two-fold.
"On one hand, grid and virtualization are converging, while on the other, application virtualization better describes the offerings (GridServer and FabricServer) from DataSynapse," Higdon said.
GridServer focuses on the prioritization, scheduling and load-balancing of application workloads, he said, while FabricServer focuses on managing application platforms such as BEA WebLogic and WebSphere in addition to ISV applications, including configuration, deployment, activation and failover.
"Together, the two products enable a real-time infrastructure that support the ever-changing business demands of the enterprise," Higdon said. "So application virtualization encompasses a broader term and better describes the innovative technology DataSynapse offers its customers."
It's a sentiment that appears to be growing.
