Mac OS X Gets A Grid Solution
May 15, 2002
By Paul Shread
Platform Computing plans to make its flagship Platform LSF software available for Apple's new Xserve, extending support for Mac OS X and Apple's new server, storage and systems management offerings.
Platform LSF is an integrated workload management and clustering solution that optimizes the use of enterprise-wide resources by providing transparent, on demand access to computing resources. With Platform LSF, Mac users in high performance industries such as digital content creation, education, government and life sciences will be able to access unlimited compute power and scalable solutions to improve collaboration and productivity, Platform said.
"Our support for Apple's Xserve reinforces our unique ability to provide heterogeneous enterprise Grid computing solutions across all platforms and all operating systems that scale from desktop computers to supercomputers to Grid," Platform Marketing Vice President Paul Hill said in a statement. "Mac OS X has drawn rave reviews from the Unix community and we are eager to help facilitate adoption of Xserve."
"The combination of the Mac Xserve with Platform Computing's technology will enhance the quality and speed of work for Mac applications in life sciences, education and business," Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, said in a statement. "Platform LSF running on Mac OS X is a powerful solution that provides our customers with outstanding productivity and efficiency."
By enabling interactive, batch and parallel jobs to run distributed across the network, Platform LSF increases the utilization of all compute resources, including workstations and servers, Platform said. It dynamically manages job priorities, enabling rush jobs to take precedence over longer running work. Platform LSF chooses the most appropriate resources and makes use of them 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the company said.
